I aim to

·      create a safe space for the client to explore frustrations, doubts and aspirations,

·      clarify, endorse and challenge, through deep listening and asking the right questions

·      help the client identify their real priorities, tap into their resourcefulness and wisdom, and generate the insights, concrete actions, and commitment to stay the course which leads to sustainable change.

My Approach to Coaching

I ensure each coaching session has a beginning, middle and end.

The beginning is about clarifying and right-sizing the issue the client most wants to explore, and clarifying why the issue is important to the client at this time.

The middle part is about exploring the issue. I draw on a range of evidence-based tools and techniques when I think they may be helpful, having first explained briefly how they work. Techniques I have found helpful include Nancy Klein’s “Time to Think” (when the client wants or needs space to explore their issues), the solutions-focused approach (when the client says or implies they feel stuck in some way), the constellations approach (when the wider systemic context is particularly relevant), Cognitive Behavioural coaching, including the ABCDE model (when the client wants to identify and challenge some of their underlying beliefs about themselves, others and the world) and the Empty Chair technique (when the client wants to practice or think through a difficult conversation they need to have).

The end part draws together the strands of the exploration, with me helping the client to summarise the insights they have uncovered; how can use these insights to move forward; possible obstacles and sources of support; and how they will keep themselves accountable.
